Abby Ahrens is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cincinnati Ohio. Her work uses natural and discarded fiber materials, photography, and projection to understand relationships with the natural world and internal landscapes when processing trauma. She aims to keep the viewer suspended in a moment between physical as well as emotional construction and deconstruction. The process of weaving acts as the basis of constructing her fiber installations while using discarded fabric, wood, and other materials to further the idea of entropy acting upon an object. Her photos reference fire as a metaphor for moments of abuse as well as recreate and retell specific experiences and familial stories. These are then projected onto relevant spaces or subjects to interpret and depict a place between victim, unintentional enabler, or observer. Her process of weaving is deeply influenced by her work in willow farming and basketry.
She has worked on Carriage House Farm studio assisting for, and farming with Amy Stewart of 65 Willows five years now. The work has become a staple within her own practice as they explore natural materials, and develop a connection to the natural world. The work includes; planting, harvesting and processing thousands of willow plants, instructing classes and weaving baskets, sculptures, fencing and installations.
